New Delhi [India], April 14 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's statement on the Waqf Amendment Act and said that the state is moving towards anarchy under the TMC chief's rule.
'Under the constitutional system of India, will Mamata Banerjee allow that a district panchayat does not follow the law of the West Bengal Assembly? Then how can a state not follow the law of the central government? This clearly shows that the Constitution is not important to the INDI alliance and Mamata Banerjee. West Bengal is moving towards anarchy under the rule of Mamata Banerjee at the hands of the miscreants,' Trivedi said in the national capital.
Earlier on April 9, Mamata Banerjee said that there will be 'no divide and rule' in the State under her watch. She added that people from the Muslim community are 'pained' by the Waqf Amendment Act, but she appealed to them not to be swayed by the political provocation.
'I want to tell the people from the minority community that I know that you are pained by the Waqf Amendment Act but have faith that there will be no divide and rule in Bengal. You should give the message of live and let live,' Mamata Banerjee said while speaking at the 'Navkar Mahamantra Divas' program.
'It is our work to give protection to those who are living in Bengal. I appeal to you all that if anyone provokes you politically to assemble, then please don't do it. Please remember that Didi will protect you and your property. If we stay together, then we can conquer the world,' she added.
She said that some people are attempting to defame Bengal.
'Our aim is to unite, not divide. When we stay united, the country will progress. Our policy is to live and let live peacefully. Some people are defaming Bengal, saying that I don't give protection to the Hindu religion in the state. Then who gives protection to all? I must give credit to the minorities in Bengal who also celebrate Hindu festivals in the state. I am proud to say this is Bengal,' she said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, came into force on April 8 (Tuesday). After a 12-hour discussion, the Upper House cleared the bill with 128 members voting in favour, whereas 95 members voted against the legislation.
The act aims to modify the Waqf Act, 1995 and the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2013. The 1995 act and the 2013 amendment laid out rules to govern the Waqf properties in India; created special courts (called Waqf Tribunals) with powers similar to civil courts (Tribunal decisions cannot be challenged in civil courts); and prohibited the sale of Waqf properties.
The opposition is hitting out at the implementation of the act, and several petitions filed in the Supreme Court have challenged the same. (ANI)
