WASHINGTON DC: U.S. President Donald Trump has dramatically reduced the timeline he's giving Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war in Ukraine, cutting a previously announced 50-day deadline down to just 10 to 12 days.

Trump warned that if no progress toward peace is made by August 7 to 9, he will push for steep economic penalties.

Speaking during a visit to Scotland, Trump expressed frustration over continued Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched more than 300 drones, along with multiple cruise and ballistic missiles, in an overnight assault, underscoring the intensifying violence despite mounting international pressure.

Trump initially said on July 14 that he would impose "severe tariffs" on Russia if a peace agreement weren't reached by early September. But in remarks this week, he said there was no point in waiting. "We just don't see any progress being made," he told reporters. "Putin's got to make a deal. Too many people are dying."

He indicated that the revised plan could include both direct sanctions on Russia and secondary tariffs aimed at its trading partners. A formal announcement is expected this week.

Trump also renewed his criticism of Putin's conduct in the war. He keeps talking about peace while bombing civilians. "And I say, that's not the way to do it," Trump said, adding, "I'm disappointed in President Putin." When asked whether he would be open to meeting Putin to discuss a ceasefire, Trump dismissed the idea. "I'm not so interested in talking anymore," he said.

Although he signaled a hardening stance, Trump also expressed personal regret over targeting ordinary Russians. "I love the Russian people," he said. "I don't want to do this to Russia, but people are dying — Russians and Ukrainians."

There has been no immediate response from the Kremlin.

Ukraine welcomed Trump's toughened posture. Andrii Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the shortened deadline sent the right message. "Putin only responds to strength — and that message has now been sent, clearly and loudly," he said in a statement on Telegram, adding that President Zelenskyy fully supports the move.

Despite U.S.-led diplomatic efforts, the war continues to escalate, with no signs of a breakthrough.
