New Delhi [India], April 1 (ANI): Congress MP K Suresh on Wednesday strongly opposed the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, terming it anti-democratic and anti-constitutional, while asserting that it adversely affects minority organisations engaged in social welfare activities.
Speaking to ANI, he said, 'We are going to oppose the FCRA Amendment Bill. It is totally against the minority community. So, the minority organisations take financial assistance from various agencies abroad. They are utilising that money for the welfare of the marginalised people and also for hospitals, schools, and orphanages. If this Bill is passed, their help will be stopped. That is why the minority organisations oppose this Bill. Opposition parties are also against this Bill. So, the FCRA Bill is anti-democratic and also anti-constitutional. So, this will be taken up today in the House. We will oppose it tooth and nail.'
On the upcoming Keralam Assembly elections, Suresh expressed confidence in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) forming the next state government. He added, 'Campaigning is going on. The trend is almost in favour of UDF. UDF will win the election. We are expecting 100 seats out of 140. Congress-led UDF will form the Govt in Keralam.'
Suresh's statements come amid heightened scrutiny of the FCRA Bill and active campaigning by parties ahead of the 2026 Keralam Assembly elections.
The Congress-led UDF seek to unseat the incumbent Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led LDF and gain control of the 140-member assembly. The LDF-led government has governed the state for around a decade. Around 2.7 crore electors are expected to participate in the election.
Keralam has traditionally followed an alternating pattern of governance, switching between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) every five years since 1982. This trend was broken in 2021 when the LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, was re-elected for a second consecutive term.
The polling for Keralam Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on April 9 under strict guidelines issued by the ECI under the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which came into effect in all poll-bound regions after the election schedule was announced. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, and the tenure of the current assembly is set to conclude on May 23. (ANI)
